Ms Laura Nicastro

Imperial College London, London (United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland)

Laura Nicastro is a PhD student from Italy. She attended her secondary education in Italy before completing her undergraduate studies in Pharmacology (BSc Hons) in summer 2019 at King's College London. She was awarded a British Heart Foundation scholarship for 1+3-year Masters and PhD, at Imperial College London in summer 2019, and is currently on her last year of PhD. Her research focuses on the regulation of myocardial contractility mediated by extracellular vesicles, following application of mechanical preload. Laura is part of the Terracciano group, which is specialised in the preparation and biomimetic culture of living myocardial slices, which are ultrathin (100-400 µm) sections of ventricular heart tissue that retain the multicellularity, architecture, and electrophysiology of the adult myocardium. She is an avid tennis-player and volunteers within the community of Sant’Egidio, which helps in concrete ways the poor, along with fostering a culture of solidarity.
