Paulus Kirchhof is Director of the Department of Cardiology at the University Heart and Vascular Center Hamburg. After studying Medicine in Heidelberg and Münster, he trained and practiced Medicine and Cardiology in Münster. From 2011-2020, he was Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Birmingham and consultant cardiologist in two Birmingham NHS trusts. In Birmingham, he co-founded the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and was its director from 2018-2020.
Paulus held several positions in the ESC and chairs the Board of AFNET, a German organisation that works closely with EHRA. Paulus is an enthusiastic teacher and a team player. His research, usually team science, spans mechanistic research, translational research, and guideline-changing clinical trials.
He speaks German, English, some French and Spanish. When time allows, he spends early mornings rowing with friends on the Alster.
