I am Assistant Professor at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA), Pisa, Italy and Consultant Cardiologist at the Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine Division, at Fondazione Toscana Gabriele Monasterio (FTGM), Pisa, Italy, a Research Hospital set up in collaboration with the Italian National Research Council and the Tuscany Regional Health System.
My current clinical interests cover the spectrum of medical management of cardiovascular diseases, in particular coronary heart disease, myopathies and cardiomyopathies, heart failure (HF) and arrhythmias, with a focus on juvenile sudden death. Since ever, my research activity has been characterized by a translational approach and has focused on brain-heart interactions and on the neuroendocrine control of cardiovascular and respiratory function in health and disease, namely in HF, with particular attention to the study of pathophysiology of visceral feed-backs, such as chemoreflex, baroreflex and ergoreflex, and central apneas.
A miniaturized cooling system for trans-esophageal echocardiographic probes may improve patients safety in minimally invasive cardiac surgery or trans-catheter percutaneous interventions
Chemoreflex and baroreflex dysfunction still predict cardiovascular mortality and hospitalizations in patients with systolic heart failure and up-to-date treatment
